Noise optimization
in the double
universal joint
The challenge
In certain steering wheel positions, double universal joints repeatedly produced disruptive noise and vibration effects (NVH) - caused by design-related bearing clearance in the centering bearing, which was noticeably amplified through the vehicle body and significantly reduced driving comfort.

Our solution
Through a design enhancement, the centering bearing was axially preloaded and combined with a tribologically optimized damping system. This completely eliminated bearing clearance while maintaining minimal friction - stable across the full temperature range and throughout the component’s service life.
Your benefit
The solution combines maximum precision with a tangible improvement in perceived driving quality. It exemplifies Willi Elbe’s strengths: deep system understanding, simulation-based development and the ability to optimize safety-relevant components down to the smallest detail. The damped double universal joint is used worldwide in current and new model series from various OEMs.
